I wanted to type the phrase "spatial relationships" to someone tonight in chat... but the word "spatial" looked wrong.  You know how words look wrong sometimes?  Usually it's from too much repetition, but sometimes, like tonight, it's just right off the bat - brain can't process, is unsure, says ask again later.

That's what it was like tonight.  I was going back and forth between "spatial" and "spacial", so I did what I always do in such cases - I went to the dictionary.

Now, my mother, visiting recently, was shocked when I couldn't instantly lay hands upon a dictionary in the house... but that's only the case because I always come to the computer to lexiconize anymore.  I'm partial to Onelook, which gives you listings from multiple dictionaries at once.  I forget who first recommended it to me, so I can't blow kisses at that person - otherwise that fine personage would totally be feelin' the virtual lip-smackage, yo.

So, I looked up "spatial," because I knew it was right (though obviously I didn't "knew" know it); then I looked up "spacial", just to see.

Hmm!

Now, the reason this is interesting to me is that "spacial" is listed as an alternate spelling, but in only thirteen dictionaries, as opposed to the eighteen hits for the main spelling.  The dictionaries that had the one but not the other are Wikipedia, the Ultralingua English Dictionary, the Online Etymology Dictionary, the Cambridge International Dictionary of English and the OED.  Interesting that the two main British English dictionaries don't have the alternate spelling.   Especially interesting to see that divergence at all, since many of these sources will have the same definition for the word itself, word for word in some cases.

Also, word.  Word word wordy word word.  Anyway.

So, I may be the only one who's actually interested in this, but I sure did talk about it in a comfortably conversational tone, didn't I?  Meanwhile, the word "word" is starting to look funny now.  Word.  Word word word.

Word.
