The second one is just the Secret Service doing their job, as they always have. If someone had said those things 20 years ago in public (a letter to the editor of the local paper, say), they would also have gotten a polite investigatory visit from concerned government agents. Just checking.
I *really* wish we could see what she actually said. Of course, this is a public forum, and we all should remember that - and it's not that I'm prone to inflammatory commentary of that sort (seems more likely that I'll comment about somebody's tits *cough*), but still, it would be good to have a sense of where the limits are these days, because I don't feel that I do any more.
While I know they were just doing their job, I can't blame her for being freaked out, either. I am generally stable, but that would undo me, I think. Hell, I was a wreck for two-three hours the time I set off the alarm at my office one lovely Saturday morning, and that was just a question of calling the VP at home so he could tell me how to shut it off in time to keep the local cops from coming out to investigate. I can't imagine being in that girl's shoes... at least not without the aid of powerful sedatives.
And, yeah, the first one scares the everlovin' shit out of me, because on a slightly different life path, that could easily have been ME, my own cute little law-abiding self. I mean, come on, I don't even make illegal U-turns.
