a few simple songs

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

My childhood was full of music. It's not that my adulthood is devoid of song, but it's simply not the same. Those old songs are timeless, ageless.  I never judged them - I can't. They were introduced into my brain before I really *had* preferences; they're probably part of what made my tastes what they are. Those songs are forever to me.

Inchworm, inchworm, measuring the marigolds;
You and your arithmetic: you'll probably go far.
Inchworm, inchworm, measuring the marigolds;
Seems to me you'd stop and see how beautiful they are.

Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me
Small and white, clean and bright, you look happy to meet me
Blossom of snow, may you bloom and grow, bloom and grow forever.
Edelweiss, edelweiss, bless my homeland forever

Today, while the blossom still clings to the vine
I'll taste your strawberry, I'll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away 'ere I forget the joy that is mine today.

I know you;  I walked with you once upon a dream.
I know you; that gleam in your eyes is so familiar a gleam.
And I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem -
but if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream.

Down by the old mill stream, where I first met you.
Well, it was there I knew that I would love you true.
you with your eyes of blue dressed in gingham, too
You were sixteen, my village queen, down by the old mill stream.
