Tonight, more snow. Flakes fell, huge and white, drifting down before a blue like you never see, a hue with an intensity that burned. I had to swallow how the loveliness made me feel just so I could keep breathing. If I knew how to crack the sky, I'd have taken a tiny piece off the edge, not enough that anyone else would miss it, but just a bit, for me to keep.

A want I rarely feel is to live in the past instead of the future, to have been young when my great grandmothers were, or their mothers, or theirs. Instead of things like snowplows and salt trucks, the sun's darkening from the summer would finally be fading from my skin as I looked out on a world, white and wild and waiting to kill me if I made a misstep; I'd know this was the time of rest between the dawn to dusk labors of spring and summer and fall.
